Born György Schwartz in Budapest, Hungary, in 1930. Survived the Nazi occupation of Hungary and moved to the UK in 1947. Studied at the London School of Economics, earning degrees in philosophy. Founded Double Eagle hedge fund in 1969, which later became the Quantum Fund. Known for his short sale of $10 billion worth of pounds sterling during the 1992 Black Wednesday UK currency crisis, earning him the title “The Man Who Broke the Bank of England.” Donated over $32 billion to the Open Society Foundations, supporting progressive and liberal causes. Played a significant role in the fall of communism in Eastern Europe and funded the Central European University. Supports progressive and liberal political causes through donations. Has been a target of numerous conspiracy theories and criticisms, often with antisemitic undertones. Married three times and has five children. Continues to be active in philanthropy and political activism.
