How to Read a North Indian Style Chart

  • In Vedic astrology, the North Indian style chart visually represents the positions of the planets at the time of a person's birth. This chart format reveals layers and layers of insight for natal and transit readings.

  • This chart is structured as a square, divided into twelve equal sections, each representing one of the twelve zodiac signs or houses (Bhavas).

  • Each house pertains to specific areas of life, such as career, relationships, home, and spirituality. The first house, known as the Ascendant or Lagna, is located at the top of the chart, and it determines which signs are assigned to each house based on the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at the time of birth.

  • The planets are placed in their respective houses according to their zodiac signs and degrees at the moment of birth. Each planet influences various aspects of a person's life.

  • The twelve zodiac signs (Aries, Taurus, etc.) have distinct characteristics and rulers that influence the house, and any planets positioned there. For example, Mars rules Aries, while Venus rules Taurus, and Jupiter in Aries is ruled by Mars, but Jupiter in Taurus is ruled by Venus.

  • A planet becomes a Bhava lord when it rules the zodiac sign that is located in a specific house, thereby influencing the matters related to that house. When Sagittarius is in the 10th house, Jupiter becomes the 10th House Ruler.

  • To read a North Indian chart, begin with the Ascendant, examining the placement of the planets and their relationships within the houses. The strength of the planets, their dignity (such as exaltation or debilitation), and their aspects are vital for making predictions and gaining insights.
